by Arlene Allen, Director of National Women's Department
After becoming the director of the National Women's Department, I felt the need to read books on leadership. I had for years read about leadership and worked at developing my leadership skills, but something is unique about the enormous task of being responsible for a staff and the knowledge that many eyes are watching me as a national leader.
James gives a warning to those who are teachers or serve in leadership roles: "Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly" (James 3:1, NIV).
We each must ask ourselves how we are affecting those who we lead. What we say and what we don't say are equally important.

QUALITIES OF GOOD LEADERSHIP Diligence |
"Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in slave labor" (Proverbs 12:24). |
|
Trustworthy messengers |
"A wicked messenger falls into trouble, but a trustworthy envoy brings healing" (Proverbs 13:17). |
|
Not penalizing people for integrity |
"It is not good to punish an innocent man, or to flog officials for their integrity" (Proverbs 17:26). |
|
Listening before answering |
"He who answers before listening-that is his folly and his shame" (Proverbs 18:13). |
|
Able to discern |
"The heart of the discerning acquires knowledge; the ears of the wise seek it out" (Proverbs 18:15). |
|
Listening to both sides of the story |
"The first to present his case seems right, till another comes forward and questions him" (Proverbs 18:17). |
|
Able to stand up under adversity |
"If you falter in times of trouble, how small is your strength!" (Proverbs 24:10). |
|
Able to stand up under praise |
"The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but man is tested by the praise he receives" (Proverbs 27:21). |
God can help you be the leader He intended you to be, as you seek His guidance regularly in leadership decisions.
