Resolutions for Leaders

Each year at this time people reflect on life. We measure reality against our intentions. This New Year's activity is rooted in the Word of God. Reflection and resolution are integral parts of the Christian walk.

As we examine ourselves and open our lives to the scrutiny of the Holy Spirit, He reveals hidden sins and broken commitments. Then, when we resolve to act upon what we learn through God's Word, a transformation occurs. Our knowledge turns into experience, and our dedication turns into usefulness. During reflection, leaders find themselves challenged to objectively review past performances, present attitudes, and future goals.

I resolve to be more knowledgeable.

Know those you lead. Discover their desires, their needs, their situations, and their dreams. It's amazing how the Holy Spirit will use this time to work in you and through you as He strengthens your ministry. Research ways to minister to those you lead. Educate yourself about resources available to you.

I resolve to be more encouraging.

This has profound implications. Young Christians need encouragement to stand firm in their newfound faith. Mature Christians need encouragement to weather seasons of testing. Women need to know you value them.

I resolve to be a stronger witness.

Witnessing doesn't always equate to a door-to-door strategy of presenting the gospel. In reality, the most common witnessing method is far more subtle, yet powerful-the witness of our life. Our words and examples witness publicly. The Scriptures say we are known by the fruit of our lips, the fruit of our deeds, and the fruit of our spirit.

I resolve to be more enthusiastic.

Some find themselves feeling forced into service-they lead out of duty rather than desire. Their attitude inspires only apathy. An enthusiastic leader, on the other hand, is a contagious leader. People feel energized by her zeal and look for ways to become involved.

Eat Right. Live Well. Love God.

Wholeness Tip

Give yourself permission to care for yourself-body, mind and spirit.

Some of us-most often women-need to give ourselves permission to take care of our bodies, minds and spirits. Often, we consume our time and energies with caring for others, and we neglect ourselves. We even convince ourselves that this is good-we may even tell ourselves that we are being better Christians by disregarding our own needs. But you need to know this is not good. God wants you to care for this body that He called "a temple of the Holy Spirit within you" (1 Corinthians 6:19), and He wants you to be His child. Pause for a moment, and actually give yourself permission to spend time today caring for yourself.
