Merry Christmas greetings from National Women’s Ministries! Oh, how I love this time of year, for so many reasons. My heart leaps as I hear carols being sung and see beautiful reminders all around declaring the good news that a Savior was born that blessed night!
This year, I am pausing in my focus on the Christmas story to contemplate the shepherds. That starry night near Bethlehem, these humble shepherds were doing what they always did, keeping their nighttime vigil over their flocks. They had a life-altering encounter with an angel who brought them “good news of great joy.” The night sky erupted when a multitude of angelic hosts sang, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased!” I can only imagine the breathtaking beauty of their appearance and their song, filling the night with unearthly harmonies! They shared a message of eternal hope, lasting peace, and a source of joy here on earth for every person, famous or anonymous, young or old, male or female, rich or poor.
These were ordinary people chosen by God to receive His good news, a message that ushered in an unprecedented, supernatural shift on earth, in the heavens, and for all eternity. He still sends that message today, to people of every station in life, every age, in all locations. A Savior has been born! Salvation has come! God is with us! We are loved and not alone!
A visitation to humble shepherds on a hillside shows us that He loves us and sees us right where we are, and He has the good news we desperately need. May our hearts be filled with no less wonder than the lowly shepherds that first Christmas night. Glory to God in the highest this blessed season! He is for us, He is with us, and He is all we need. Merry Christmas!
