SaveOne: ministry to women suffering the guilt of abortion
Sanctity of Human Life Sunday is celebrated the third Sunday in January.
“No little girl dreams of growing up some day and having an abortion,“ says Sheila Harper, founder of SaveOne, a ministry she established to help women seeking deliverance form the emotional pain and guilt of an abortion.
Sheila experienced her own pain and guilt when she had an abortion in 1985. For seven years afterward, she struggled with drinking, drug use, financial debt, and an attempted suicide. “After being consumed with death, I cleaned myself up enough to get married,” Sheila shares.
When she heard about a class being offered for women who had experienced abortion, she signed up. “This Bible study gave me back my life. It showed me how I needed to accept Jesus’ forgiveness and forgive myself. It was an incredible discovery and a much-needed transformation.”
Sheila established SaveOne in 2000 to help reach women struggling with past abortion decisions. In 2003, she wrote a study for women to walk through, called Save One: a guide to emotional healing after abortion, and published a second version in 2008.
Here are excerpts from the first chapter of that study:
Did you know that God is your protector, provider, hope, and healer, Father, and strength? He is able to see all that happens to you. He is able to calm any storm in your life. He is able to be there even when your friends and family aren’t. He is able to give you a destiny. He is able to plan your future. He is able to open every door to get you to that future. He is able to put you back on the right path, even when you’ve chosen the wrong one. He is able to forgive you of your sins. He is able to send His very Son to die for you in order for that to happen. He is able to love you more than anyone on this earth has the capability to love. He is able to save your soul.
We are so limited in our human bodies—by life, age, weather patterns, wealth (or lack of it), social status, emotional baggage, our families, ideas that have been formed for us by our families, self-esteem, our government . . . the list goes on and on.
Do you realize God has no limits? He doesn’t have an earthly body that ages and will eventually wear out. He isn’t affected by weather patterns; He creates them. He doesn’t care how much money you have or don’t have; He is able to provide more or take away.
He isn’t impressed with your social status; He is the King of all Kings. He is saddened by the emotional baggage we carry: He wishes we would give it all to Him to carry. He hopes every day we will begin to see ourselves as He sees us, not as our family tells us we are.
God is as close to you as you will allow Him to be. He created you for a purpose, with a destiny. . . . God’s destiny for you never included abortion. When you chose to take a left fork onto the road called Abortion, you veered off into an area that wasn’t part of His plan. He wants to steer you back onto the road He created for you. He wants to take this experience and turn it into something beautiful for Him. Only God can do that, and He will do it if you allow Him to.
The New Living Translation says it best, I believe:
No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from His love. Death can’t, and life can’t. The angels can’t, and the demons can’t. Our fears for today, our worries about tomorrow, and even the powers of hell can’t keep God’s love away. Whether we are high above the sky or in the deepest ocean, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:37-39, NLT).
I believe that has to be one of the most beautiful Scriptures in the entire Bible. Nowhere does it say, “But if you have an abortion, God will not take you back, or love you anymore.” No, it says nothing can separate us from His love.
